This is what I hope will be the first of several posts with photos and descriptions of common Bolivian foods. I took the above photo peering into the gigantic cooler of buchere fish sitting outside my house. Someone caught them in a river in El Carmen, Bolivia - the village where my Mauricio's family originates from - and sent them to the city to be sold.

Buchere is prepared in soup, but rather than being chopped into pieces, each diner's bowl contains two or three entire fish. As I said, I haven't eaten it yet : )
