"When I grow up I want to be..."

When I was little, I wanted to be a construction worker and build homes. I remember passing construction sites and admiring the complexity of the house structure. I still think that the construction of a house, something that will become a home, is exciting.

By third grade I had changed my mind and wanted to be an architect. This went on for many years, complete with designing homes on both paper and my non-professional architecture computer programs. I loved to imagine a family and then create a home for them.

By the time I was in high school my interests has shifted slightly and I wanted to be an interior designer. I continued using my architecture programs but simply decorated pre-designed homes. I spent quite a bit of time and money on my own bedroom in my parents’ house and watched HGTV obsessively.

When time came to apply to college, I changed my mind one last time and decided on a degree that related to housing from a social perspective. I studied homelessness, transitional housing, disaster relief, foreclosure, psychology, and many other topics relating to shelter and people. I believe that housing is one of the most important things in a person’s life. You may take your home for granted or not give it much thought, but imagine if one day you no longer had it; or if all the details that you love about your home disappeared. A shelter may be four walls and a roof, but a home is so much more. A home is security, comfort, expression, family, and pride.

I’m not currently doing the type of work in housing that I dream of, but I haven’t given up hope for the future. I believe that God instilled this passion for housing in me for a reason and that the future holds much more than I can even imagine.

What about you? Do you remember “what you wanted to be when you grew up”? Did that change by the time you actually grew up or is it still a passion?

Well, Laura, imagining me as a ballerina would probably send you into gales of laughter! But that was my early dream : )

Hi Laura,
Your Auntie Jan wanted to be a Mommy with babies (I played with dolls a lot). And I'm ever so grateful that I got to do that! I still love being a Mommy, and I still love babies and hope to volunteer more with them in the future - maybe on a mission trip to an orphanage
