A Rainy Day in the Amazon

Tuesday, December 22, 2009

The primary mode of transportation between Bolivian cities is the bus. Flotas are very large, comfortable buses with seats that are like recliner chairs. Normally these buses travel through the night, allowing riders to sleep the entire trip. But yesterday I took a trip through the day, permitting me to enjoy the scenery.

Although the sky was dark and it rained off and on, I enjoyed the vibrant green colors as we travelled along the edge of the Amazon rainforest. I would have loved to see something exciting like a monkey or a jaguar, but I think they try to avoid the speeding buses.

The trip would have been incomplete without a delay from the Bolivian police. Our bus was pulled over and searched for drugs – something that apparently involves shaking my box of decorated sugar cookies (meant to be a gift) and stealing the driver’s bottle of coca-cola.

But we finally made it to our destination and I am now happily enjoying Christmas decorations, good food, and beautiful weather.

I came across your blog from the BlogFrog. I too want to be a missionary when I graduate college. I actually have a few friends that are serving in Bolivia now! I hope you have a Merry CHRISTmas!
