Pink Nails

Thursday, December 31, 2009

Yesterday afternoon I got a sort-of manicure and pedicure in preparation for the New Year. I say sort of because it probably wasn't the typical manicure experience, but I appreciated it nonetheless. In Bolivia it's common for vendors to go house to house offering products or services, and manicures are not the exception. So yesterday a nice woman spent several hours outside of Mauricio's grandma's house painting all of our fingernails and toenails. To be honest, I don't feel like they do that great of a job, so I tend to avoid getting them, but the total cost was $3.50 so I figured I'd just go ahead and do it.

Anyway, the woman was working on my feet, which is meant to be pretty relaxing. She used stones and brushes and all sorts of tools to make my skin nice and soft and get the nails ready. All of a sudden, I heard lots of commotion and the family dog came flying past me, chasing after one of the many chickens that lives outside the home. Mauricio's cousin was chasing behind them and yelling at the dog to catch the chicken. They eventually got it cornered and his cousin grabbed it.

She brought it right over next to me and proceeded to calmly wring its neck. It was evidently a very strong chicken with a thick neck, so it took her a few tries to actually kill it. Meanwhile, the woman continued working on my feet without batting an eyelash. I was kind of disgusted.

For the remainder of the time, I tried to just focus on the pretty pink paint going onto my nails and ignore the chicken feathers fluttering out the kitchen window.

As soon as everyone's nails were done and dry, we sat down to a nice chicken dinner.
